ਸਫਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ?
Who is the acknowledged Sikh

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਜਾਇ ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
He is true Sikh who surrenders before the Guru and bows his head;

ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਮਥਾ ਲਾਇਆ।
Who puts his mind and forehead on the feet of Guru;

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ।
Who holding dear to his heart the teachings
of the Guru expels ego from his self;

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਭਾਣਾ ਭਾਇਆ।
Who loves the will of VaheGuru and has attained
equipoise by becoming Guru-oriented, gurmukh;

ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵਲਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ।
Who by merging his consciousness in the Word
has acted according to the divine Will (hukam).

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ।
He (the true Sikh) as the result of his love and
fear of holy congregation attains his own self (atma).

ਚਰਨ ਕਵਲ ਪਤੀਆਇ ਭਵਰੁ ਲੁਭਾਇਆ।
He remains stuck to the lotus feet of the Guru like the black bee.

ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਟ ਪਰਚਾਇ ਅਪਿਓ ਪੀਆਇਆ।
Getting enveloped in this delight  he goes on quaffing the nectar.

ਧੰਨ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੨੦॥੩॥
Blessed is the mother of such a person.
Only his coming to this world is fruitful.

ਛੰਤੁ ॥
Shhanth ||

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਚਨ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੰਤਨ ਆਧਾਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
Your Word is Incomparable and Infinite.
I contemplate the Word of Your Bani, the Support of the Saints.

ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਸੁਆਸ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
I remember Him in meditation with every breath and morsel of food,
with perfect faith. How could I forget Him from my mind?

ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਬੇਸਾਰੀਐ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਹੀ ਟਾਰੀਐ ਗੁਣਵੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
How could I forget Him from my mind, even for an instant?
He is the Most Worthy; He is my very life!

ਮਨ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਫਲ ਦੇਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
My VaheGuru and Master is the Giver of the fruits of the mind’s desires.
He knows all the useless vanities and pains of the soul.

ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਨਾਥੇ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੇ ਜਪਿ ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੀਐ ॥
Meditating on the Patron of lost souls, the Companion of all,
your life shall not be lost in the gamble.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਾਰੀਐ ॥੨॥
Nanak offers this prayer to VaheGuru: Please shower me with Your Mercy,
and carry me across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

ਗਉੜੀ ਚੇਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Gourree Chaethee Mehalaa 1 ||

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

There are five of them, but I am all alone.
How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?

ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥

They are beating and plundering me over and over again;
unto whom can I complain? ||1||

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

Chant the Name of the Supreme VaheGuru, O my mind.

ਆਗੈ ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Otherwise, in the world hereafter,
you will have to face the awesome and cruel army of Death. ||1||Pause||

ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥

God has erected the temple of the body;
He has placed the nine doors, and the soul-bride sits within.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥

She enjoys the sweet play again and again,
while the five demons are plundering her. ||2||

ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥

In this way, the temple is being demolished;
the body is being plundered, and the soul-bride, left all alone, is captured.

ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥

Death strikes her down with his rod,
the shackles are placed around her neck, and now the five have left. ||3||

ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥

The wife yearns for gold and silver,
and her friends, the senses, yearn for good food.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥

O Nanak, she commits sins for their sake;
she shall go, bound and gagged, to the City of Death. ||4||2||14||
